Residents in Steinbach, Manitoba, should prepare for a quick weather shift this week as a snowy Thursday night is expected to be followed by a rapid warm-up and melting on Saturday.
According to Environment Canada, periods of snow will begin the night of Thursday, March 5, 2026, with temperatures dropping to -13°C. By Saturday afternoon, March 7, 2026, the weather is forecast to turn sunny with a high of +5°C.
This quick jump in temperature will cause snow to melt fast, creating slushy conditions on the 130 kilometres of roads maintained by Steinbach Public Works. In the surrounding RM of Hanover, public works crews are watching gravel roads closely for “frost boils” and soft spots that can make driving difficult as the ground thaws.
The City of Steinbach and the RM of Hanover typically put weight restrictions on local streets during these periods to prevent heavy trucks from damaging soft pavement. Drivers are also encouraged to check road reports for major routes like Highway 12 and Highway 52, which often get icy when melting snow refreezes overnight.
To help prevent flooding around homes, the RM of Hanover suggests that residents clear snow and debris away from their water spouts and drains. Taking these steps now helps meltwater flow away from houses rather than pooling on the property during the Saturday thaw.
