Residents in Sylvan Lake, Alberta, should prepare for light snow and mist today before a major warming trend brings spring-like temperatures to the community this weekend. According to Environment Canada, about two centimetres of snow is expected to fall on March 3, 2026, as winds shift to the northeast.
The morning began with a bitter wind chill of -18 C and gusts reaching up to 50 kilometres per hour, which may reduce visibility for drivers. However, the cold weather is not expected to last, as a significant warmup will begin later this week. Daytime highs are forecast to reach 6 C on Friday and climb to 8 C by Saturday.
This rapid change in temperature can create slippery conditions on local roads and sidewalks as snow melts during the day and freezes again overnight. Residents are also encouraged to be careful near the water, as Sylvan Lake is spring-fed. This causes the ice thickness to vary significantly from one area to another, which can make the surface unpredictable during a thaw.
The air quality for the region is currently rated as low risk, making it safe for outdoor activities once the snow clears. Looking ahead, the Sylvan Lake RCMP is reminding everyone that all ice fishing shelters must be removed from the lake by the mandatory deadline of March 31, 2026.
