The Rotary Club of Sylvan Lake is working with the Town of Sylvan Lake to install new memorial stones along the lighthouse pathway. This initiative offers residents a way to honour loved ones while supporting local community programs.
The granite stones, which measure 12 by 12 by 4 inches, are produced by Wallah Signs/Memorials, a company based in Red Deer. Each stone is available for $600. After covering the costs of the stone and engraving, all remaining funds are donated to Rotary projects, including student scholarships, local food bank efforts, and youth programming.
Residents interested in purchasing a memorial stone can pick up an order form at The Paint Stop, located at 150 Pelican Place. Jim MacSween, president of the Rotary Club of Sylvan Lake, noted that the organization is pleased to bring this opportunity back to the community after a four-year gap.
The stones are placed near the Sylvan Lake lighthouse, a landmark modelled after the lighthouse at Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia, and officially opened on Canada Day in 2016. The structure replaced an original lighthouse built in 1988, which was removed in 2012 due to building deficiencies. The project to reconstruct the lighthouse was supported by $240,000 raised by the local Rotary club and an additional $100,000 raised through the Community Foundation of Central Alberta.
