Taber residents will see construction activity at the Taber Health Centre as a $7.2-million renovation of surgical areas got underway the week of June 15, 2026. The project, which modernizes the facility’s two operating rooms, is expected to wrap up in fall 2027 without disrupting patient care.

According to Alberta Health Services, one operating room suite will stay open throughout construction so surgeries continue. The work includes new surgical lighting and equipment booms, upgraded air handling, fresh wall protection, and cosmetic improvements to the nurses’ station, day surgery, pediatric dental and surgical workstation, and OR suites.

The project is funded through the Alberta government’s Alberta Surgical Initiative and Infrastructure Maintenance Program. It aims to boost safety and efficiency for both patients and staff while modernizing the look of surgical spaces. A construction trailer and storage container have been placed near the ambulance bay exit to support the work.

The Taber & District Health Foundation (TDHF) has temporarily moved its office from the surgical area to the East Wing off the main lobby of the Taber Clinic because of the renovations. The health centre at 4326 50 Avenue has served the region for over 80 years, first opening as Taber Municipal Hospital in September 1943. A previous $9-million redevelopment in 2015 brought many community health services under one roof.

The current upgrades are part of a provincial push to reduce surgical wait times and strengthen rural healthcare. The Taber Health Centre offers 24-hour emergency care, obstetrics, palliative care, intensive care, and surgical services to about 8,862 town residents plus the surrounding Municipal District of Taber population.
