Taber’s Royal Canadian Legion Branch #20 will celebrate 100 years of serving the community with a flag raising ceremony in downtown Taber on July 17, 2026 at 11:00 AM. The Town of Taber is helping recognize this milestone, and everyone is invited to attend. The Legion Lounge will be open for visitors after the ceremony.
The event kicks off a year of centenary celebrations for the branch, which was officially chartered on November 22, 1926. The national Royal Canadian Legion also marks its 100th anniversary on July 17, the date it was incorporated by a Special Act of Parliament in 1926. Across Canada, branches will hold open houses, barbecues, and special events throughout the weekend.
Abe Andres, president of Branch #20, has been a steady voice for the Taber Legion. As of early 2024, the branch had 368 members. It relies on community ties to stay strong, with about 60 per cent of its funding coming from contracts with the Town of Taber to manage Legion Park and the Youth Centre in north Taber.
The Legion Hall at 5205 48th Avenue is owned by the national headquarters, Dominion Command, but the local branch runs programs that touch many lives. The Town’s Veterans Banner Program, which hangs banners to honour local veterans each November, directs all proceeds to Branch #20.
To celebrate the centenary, the Legion is offering free membership to anyone who joins in 2026. The national organization now has over 1,350 branches and about 270,000 members coast to coast.
The flag raising on July 17 is just the start. More anniversary events are planned for later in 2026. Everyone is welcome to come downtown, watch the ceremony, and then visit the Legion Lounge.
