The Manitoba First Nations Police Service has taken a man into custody following a break-in and assault at a home in Opaskwayak Cree Nation on May 15, 2026.
Shortly before 6:00 pm, police received a call from an off-duty officer who reported that an adult male had come to his door. When the officer opened it, the man pushed him inside and attempted to start a fight. The officer was able to push the man back outside and contact his colleagues for assistance.
Responding officers used a drone and police dog to locate the suspect at a nearby residence. When the man refused to comply with police commands and continued to resist arrest, officers deployed pepper spray to take him into custody safely.
Garth Preston Carriere, 46, of Cumberland House, Saskatchewan, is now facing several charges, including break and enter with intent to commit an offence, assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and mischief. According to police, Carriere was already under a court-ordered release at the time of the incident, stemming from a previous arrest in April 2026 for similar offences involving an off-duty peace officer.
The Manitoba First Nations Police Service has been providing policing services to Opaskwayak Cree Nation since April 12, 2021. The service is currently led by Chief of Police Jason Colon, who was sworn in on April 14, 2026.
