Amanda Lathlin, the provincial representative for The Pas-Kameesak, passed away on March 21, 2026, at the age of 49 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She had served the northern community for nearly 11 years after first winning her seat in a 2015 by-election.
Amanda Lathlin made history as the first First Nations woman elected to the provincial legislature. She followed in the footsteps of her father, Oscar Lathlin, and worked to establish Oscar’s Place, a local homeless shelter in The Pas named in his honour.
During her time in office, she helped pass laws to provide time off for people who experience a miscarriage and worked to improve services for sexual assault survivors in the north. According to the Manitoba Government, she had been on a leave of absence for health reasons since February 2026.
On March 23, 2026, Premier Wab Kinew honoured her by placing the provincial flag over her empty seat during a session at the legislature. Her family members, including her daughter and her newborn granddaughter, were present in the gallery for the ceremony.
The provincial riding of The Pas-Kameesak includes the town of The Pas and several surrounding northern communities. The name of the district includes the Cree word for big, which refers to Lake Winnipeg.
