The Thompson Farmers Market is set to open for the season this Saturday, July 18, 2026, giving residents a chance to buy local food again after a spring and early summer filled with floods and hail across Manitoba.
Farmers around the province have been dealing with heavy rain and severe storms that left fields underwater and crops damaged. Keystone Agricultural Producers president Jill Verwey called the situation “huge devastation in crops,” with growers having to wait and see what they can salvage.
The Manitoba government’s April flood bulletin warned that Thompson and other northern areas would be hit by heavy snow, and by June, communities from Swan River to Stonewall had declared states of local emergency because of flooding. A July 5-6 hail storm pounded Killarney with golf ball-sized hail that broke skylights and wrecked crops, leaving residents saying they had never seen anything like it.
Even with all that weather trouble across the province, the Thompson Farmers Market is moving ahead with its weekly Saturday events. The market gives local growers and artisans a spot to sell directly to the community, and shoppers get a chance to pick up fresh food and homemade goods.
