Commuters in Thompson, Manitoba, should plan for extra travel time on July 17 and July 18. The City of Thompson warns that lane restrictions and traffic delays are coming to Thompson Drive, a major route through the city.
The city posted the notice on July 15, alerting residents that roadwork will reduce capacity on the thoroughfare for two days. Thompson Drive intersects with the main commercial strip along Mystery Lake Road, so the delays could affect morning and evening commutes.
Mayor Colleen Smook said earlier this summer that ongoing construction stretches from Cree Road near KFC to Beaver Crescent in the Giant Tiger area. Crews have been removing curbs, installing catch basins, and getting the area ready for sidewalk and paving work.
Thompson Drive will be a construction zone for some time as part of a larger 2026 local road renewal project, though work won’t happen every day. The multi-year effort is backed by federal and provincial funding, and covers about 20 kilometres of streets across the city.
Drivers are encouraged to plan for delays and look for alternate routes if possible while crews are active on July 17 and 18.
