Nursing students and faculty at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, unveiled a new collaborative art installation on February 27, 2026. The project, titled “One in 30 Trillion,” features embroidery work from the 2025 second and third-year nursing students that celebrates the history of their profession.
Local artist Betty Carpick led the project by helping students embroider individual human cells onto fabric. Carpick then stitched these pieces onto a historical nurse’s apron to show how 30 trillion cells work together to make a human body.
The reveal took place in the Nursing Skills Lab in the Braun Building and was organized with help from the Lakehead University Nursing Association. This partner group also provided refreshments for students and staff who attended the event.
The artwork will be permanently displayed at the university’s Student Health and Wellness reception area. Organizers say the installation is meant to represent connection and belonging while highlighting the historical roots of nursing.
