The City of Thunder Bay has received $2,915,335 from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) for the 2025 fiscal year. This funding represents the city’s share of revenue generated by the local casino.
Since the facility first opened in August 2000, it has contributed increasing revenue to the city. These payments are part of a provincial program that shares a portion of gaming revenue with host communities. According to the city, this money is used to help cover municipal costs and reduce the annual tax burden for local residents and businesses.
The casino is currently operated by Gateway Casinos & Entertainment, which took over management in 2017. The local site, which employs approximately 185 people, remains an active contributor to the city’s finances. City Treasurer Keri Greaves noted that these funds provide essential support for municipal services and local programs.
Mayor Ken Boshcoff, who was in office when the casino opened 25 years ago, stated that the proceeds have supported a variety of important local projects and non-profit organizations. The payments are distributed quarterly based on a formula that accounts for both slot machine and table game revenue generated at the gaming site.
