Two members of the Thunder Bay Police Service have been recognized for honours as part of the 2026 Police Services Hero of the Year Awards. The Police Association of Ontario, which represents police personnel across the province, announced the awards to recognize officers who have made significant contributions to their communities.
Constable Ken Ogima has been recognized for the Bravery Award & Chief’s Commendation, following his actions during a high-risk incident on December 26, 2024, near Highway 11/17 and Pebblestone Drive. After a suspect refused to comply with police commands and opened fire at Constable Josh Pugh – narrowly missing him – Constable Ogima returned fire and incapacitated the suspect, preventing further risk to the public and to responding officers. He previously received a Bravery Award and Chief’s Commendation from the Thunder Bay Police Service for his conduct that day.
Constable Josh Pugh has also been recognized following the same incident. Immediately after the suspect was incapacitated, Constable Pugh began administering first aid to the injured man – the same individual who had just attempted to harm him. His actions were recognized internally with a Lifesaving Award, cited as a demonstration of professionalism, composure, and compassion under extreme pressure.
These recognitions come as the police service, led by Chief Darcy Fleury, continues its ongoing work to foster community trust.
