Environment Canada issued a Yellow Blizzard Warning for the Tuktoyaktuk – East Channel Region on March 3, 2026. The agency reports that strong winds and falling snow will create near-zero visibility, making travel in the area very dangerous.
Winds from the west are expected to gust up to 60 kilometres per hour throughout the day. Extremely cold temperatures are also a concern, with wind chills hitting -46 C this morning, which can cause frostbite on exposed skin in only a few minutes.
Weather conditions are expected to be at their worst for the remainder of March 3, 2026, with the storm likely to weaken and visibility to improve by the morning of Wednesday, March 4, 2026. Local residents are encouraged to stay indoors and limit travel to only what is absolutely necessary.
The warning comes just one day after Mayor Vince Teddy spoke about how frequent road closures on the Inuvik-Tuktoyaktuk Highway have impacted the community. On March 2, 2026, the mayor stated that the frequency of these closures is so high that “suffering becomes like, normal” for residents.
Records show that the highway, which is the only road link for the community, has been closed for as much as 40 per cent of the winter season in the past. These closures often stop the delivery of essential goods and can disrupt local services and outdoor work.
