The North West Company is providing financial support to two local mushers from Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, to help preserve the traditional sport of dog sledding. Mitchell Jacobson and Jemra Gruben, who are both Inuvialuit, received the funding through their training organization, Jacobson Dog Racing Kennels.
Dog sledding remains a significant part of Inuvialuit culture and history. By supporting these athletes, the company aims to help promote traditional practices while strengthening the communities it serves. The North West Company, which operates the Northern Store in Tuktoyaktuk, invests over $2.8 million annually into local events and community causes.
Mitchell Jacobson recently showcased his skills on an international stage, placing 16th at the 80th Open North American Championship held in Fairbanks, Alaska, from March 20 to 22, 2026. He completed the event with a three-day total time of 254:23.3. While both racers now train in Crooked Creek, Alberta, they continue to receive support from multiple partners, including the Arctic Research Foundation.
Looking ahead, Jacobson and Gruben are preparing to participate in upcoming spring carnival races throughout the Beaufort Delta region. The support from the company, which operates one of only two grocery stores in the hamlet of approximately 940 people, highlights an ongoing commitment to maintaining cultural heritage in the region.
