The Town of View Royal, British Columbia, is asking for volunteers to help clean up Portage Park on March 29, 2026. The event runs from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM on the west side of the park near the playground. Community members will work together to pull out invasive weeds and put native plants back into the ground.
People who attend will work with the View Royal Habitat Restoration program to clear out plants like English Ivy and Himalayan Blackberry. No experience or registration is needed to join the group. Coordinator Chris Junck and other staff will provide all the necessary tools, gloves, and training, along with refreshments for the volunteers.
The Greater Victoria Green Team has partnered with the town on these projects since 2017. During a similar event in late February 2026, 75 volunteers removed enough invasive plants to fill about 118 bathtubs. This ongoing work helps keep the local environment healthy for the community.
This work supports the town’s recent plan to protect its 700 hectares of green space and forests. Portage Park itself has a long history as a traditional route used by First Nations people traveling between Esquimalt Harbour and Portage Inlet. Residents are encouraged to check the weather on the morning of the event, as work parties may be cancelled during storms.
