The View Royal Fire Rescue has raised the local fire danger rating to high as of May 3, 2026, and is reminding residents open burning is strictly prohibited within the municipality. This move comes as dry forest conditions across Vancouver Island have created a serious risk for wildfires throughout the region.
According to the BC Wildfire Service, forest fuels are currently very dry, meaning new fires can start easily and burn vigorously. The provincial agency is also enacting a broader campfire ban across the entire Coastal Fire Centre, which includes Vancouver Island and the South Coast, beginning at noon on May 7, 2026.
The heightened risk follows three weeks of warm, dry weather with no significant rainfall in the forecast. Julia Caranci, a fire information officer with the Coastal Fire Centre, noted that these dry conditions are expected to continue. The region has already seen an increase in activity, with crews responding to 25 wildfires since April 1, compared to 15 during the same period last year. Notably, a human-caused fire was detected near Ladysmith on May 3.
Local fire officials are emphasizing the severity of the current situation. Langford Fire Chief Chris Aubrey stated that he cannot recall a time when conditions have been this dry so early in the season. Neighbouring Langford Fire Rescue has also implemented a local campfire ban until further notice.
In View Royal, the existing municipal burning ban remains in effect. This prohibits all outdoor burning, including open-air fires and the use of incinerators, such as barrels or drums. Residents are urged to use extreme caution with any outdoor activities to help prevent further wildfire incidents.
