The Waterloo Regional Police Service is urging residents in Cambridge to be cautious following a series of incidents where counterfeit currency was used during online buy-and-sell transactions throughout March 2026. In these cases, individuals selling electronic devices through online marketplaces were paid with fake cash after meeting buyers in person.
Police previously released a photograph of a suspect connected to these incidents, but the image has since been removed from public view after investigators determined the person involved is under the age of 18. Authorities are continuing their investigation into these frauds and are asking anyone who believes they may have been a victim to come forward.
To help prevent similar incidents, police encourage residents to complete online sales in well-lit, public spaces. The service provides designated buy and sell exchange zones at several of its facilities, including the North Division at 45 Columbia Street East in Waterloo, the front parking lot of the police headquarters at 200 Maple Grove Road in Cambridge, and the South Division located at 176 Hespeler Road in Cambridge.
