The City of Waterloo, Ontario, has declared a Community Safety Event for March 14 and March 17, 2026, to manage large crowds during St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. This declaration includes a total ban on street parking in the neighbourhoods near the universities to ensure emergency vehicles can move through the area without delay.
The parking ban will be in effect from 12:01 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on both days. The restricted zone is located between Columbia Street West, Weber Street North, Bridgeport Road East, and Albert Street.
This move gives the Waterloo Regional Police Service and bylaw officers the authority to strictly enforce local rules about noise and public behaviour. Officials decided not to seek a special court order this year, stating that existing city rules are enough to handle the gatherings and protect the community.
City staff say the goal is to prevent the strain on emergency services that often happens during large, unsanctioned street parties. Residents and students in the area are reminded that blocking sidewalks or roadways will result in fines or charges.
