The last active wildfire in the Watson Lake fire district has been fully extinguished, bringing the total for the 2026 season to five fires — a mix of wildfires and prescribed burns — that affected roughly 2.46 hectares, according to the Government of Yukon. That means residents in Watson Lake, Upper Liard, Rancheria, and along the Nahanni Range Road can breathe easier as the immediate threat from wildfire in the region is over for now.
The most recent change came when fire 2026WL005, a 0.39-hectare blaze near Watson Lake, was upgraded from under control to fully extinguished. Fire 2026WL004 on Upper Liard Road, initially listed at 0.40 hectares, was confirmed extinguished at a final size of 0.01 hectares. All five fires were either put out or completed as prescribed burns.
The Yukon Wildland Fire Management branch had 26 firefighting crews ready this season, working from six regional bases including the Watson Lake Fire Centre on Airport Road. Crews included government teams and contracted firefighters through Yukon First Nations and Yukon First Nations Wildfire.
The quiet fire season follows a much tougher 2025, when 158 wildfires burned more than 169,000 hectares across the territory. Locally, the Watson Lake area has been working under a 3-Year Community Wildfire Protection Plan developed with the Liard First Nation and Yukon Government. That plan focuses on cutting wildfire risk through fuel removal, planting fire-resilient trees, prescribed burns, and public education.
The five fires this year were small, and officials say the quick action and prevention work helped keep the fire season manageable for the southeastern Yukon communities.
