A newly reported wildfire is burning out of control in the Watson Lake fire district, according to the Yukon Wildland Fire Management. The fire, designated 2026WL006, covers 3.00 hectares in a transitional fire management zone and was first spotted on July 22, 2026.
Officials are providing a monitored response, tracking the fire for potential social disruption or other major impacts as it takes on its natural ecological role in the boreal forest. The fire is located far from communities, so no structural threats are expected at this time.
A second, larger fire named Hyland River (2026WL007) was also reported on July 24, 2026, covering 35.00 hectares in a wilderness zone. That fire, too, is being monitored rather than actively suppressed.
All other fires in the Watson Lake district are either extinguished or completed. The Liard First Nation and residents in Watson Lake, Upper Liard, and Rancheria are encouraged to stay informed through official wildfire updates.
The territory uses a fire zonation system created with community input in 2003, dividing land into five response categories. Fires in transitional and wilderness zones are often monitored unless they threaten people, property, or infrastructure.
