Watson Lake residents can drop off yard cleanup debris at the local landfill for free starting August 13, 2026, thanks to funding from the Government of Yukon’s FireSmart program. The free disposal program runs until November 30, 2026, and is meant to help homeowners clear brush, branches, and other woody material from around their properties.
The Town of Watson Lake says the program accepts clean, untreated natural wood debris from residential properties, including brush, branches, trees, tree sections, and stumps. Construction wood and commercial woody debris are not eligible for free disposal.
Residents are encouraged to bring the material to the Watson Lake Landfill and Recycling Facility while doing yard cleanup, property maintenance, or FireSmart work around their homes. Removing brush, branches, and other woody material from around homes and properties can help reduce available wildfire fuels and contribute to a more FireSmart community.
The free disposal offer is part of a broader effort under the Town of Watson Lake’s 3-Year Community Wildfire Protection Plan, developed in partnership with the Liard First Nation and the Yukon Government. That plan runs from 2025 to 2028 and focuses on reducing wildfire risk in the area.
