The Watson Lake Town Council has officially adopted Property Tax Levy Bylaw 2025-011, which sets the property tax rates for the 2026 fiscal year. The new bylaw, approved on March 30, 2026, includes a 1% increase to the property tax levy, a move intended to help cover the rising costs of providing essential municipal services.
This tax levy is a key part of the municipal budget and funds services that residents rely on every day, including road maintenance, emergency response, recreation facilities, and waste collection. During a meeting on December 2, 2025, the town council agreed to the increase to address these growing operational expenses.
Mayor Lauren Hanchar and the town council, which includes Councillors Thomas Slager, Norma Puckett, William Whimp, and Denina Paquette, reviewed various financial options before finalizing the rates. During these budget discussions, Mayor Hanchar noted that many municipalities across the country are examining different ways to generate income, as property taxes can sometimes limit local financial flexibility.
Chief Administrative Officer Cam Lockwood supported the process by providing tax rate comparisons from other Yukon municipalities. The council, led by Mayor Lauren Hanchar, continues to meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 710 Adela Trail, with options for residents to attend in-person or via Zoom.
