The City of Wetaskiwin is calling on local artists and creators from across Alberta to submit design proposals for a new art installation at a local roundabout. Residents will have the opportunity to participate in a shortlisting process for the project from April 7 to April 29, 2026, helping to select the final piece that will be installed to enhance the community.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the City of Wetaskiwin to expand public art, a goal outlined in the city’s 2026-2029 Strategic Plan. Recently approved by city council, the plan identifies social and cultural life as one of the four key pillars guiding future city development. The project also follows the long-term vision established in the city’s 50-Year Community Vision, which encourages the creation of vibrant streets and cultural attractions for the community of over 13,000 residents.
The city has a history of supporting public art, including a 2024 project where an Indigenous artist was commissioned to create a mural in the downtown area. That project was facilitated through STEPS Public Art. The city continues to support the local arts scene through venues such as the Caelin Art Gallery, the Wetaskiwin Allied Arts and Crafts Centre, and the annual Wetaskiwin Arts and Music Festival.
Wetaskiwin, located on Treaty 6 Territory, continues to integrate cultural development into its municipal planning. The city’s ongoing commitment to community programming is supported by the 2026 operating and capital budgets, which were approved by council last year.
