Wetaskiwin, Alberta residents are invited to a community barbecue on Friday, August 21, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the RCMP detachment located at 5005 48 Avenue. The event is being held in support of the Special Olympics and will feature free food, games, and activities for all ages.
The Wetaskiwin RCMP is hosting the barbecue as part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run, the largest grassroots fundraising initiative for Special Olympics globally. In Alberta alone, the program raises over $100,000 annually. Attendees can enjoy a free lunch, explore police vehicles and equipment displays, and take part in family-friendly games.
No registration is required for the event, which is designed to be a welcoming community afternoon. Inspector John Spaans, Commanding Officer of the Wetaskiwin RCMP, has made community engagement a top priority, stating his goal is to get members out into the community to speak with citizens. This barbecue is one of several recent initiatives, including a Regimental Ball in May 2026 that raised over $19,000 for local charities.
The timing coincides with the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games being held in Medicine Hat, Alberta, from August 11 to 15. The Law Enforcement Torch Run Final Leg ran from August 7 to 11, leading into the Games. Wetaskiwin RCMP members join law enforcement across the province in supporting Special Olympics athletes through events like this barbecue.
