On March 16, 2026, the Region of Durham launched a new addiction and shelter recovery centre to help vulnerable people in Whitby, Ontario. This new service provides a single place for residents to find medical help, counselling, and housing support.
The centre is currently working out of a temporary office at the Durham Community Health Centre in Oshawa while its permanent home is finalized. The permanent building in Whitby is expected to be finished during the 2026-2027 budget year.
According to Lorne Coe, the Member of Provincial Parliament for Whitby, the project focuses on giving people their lives back through treatment. The provincial government is setting up 28 of these centres across Ontario to help people move toward long-term recovery.
By putting different types of support under one roof, the centre aims to make it easier for people to get care without dealing with complicated red tape. Local officials say this approach will help improve community safety while addressing the local homelessness and drug crisis.
