Whitby Member of Parliament Ryan Turnbull visited the Durham Regional Police Service headquarters in Whitby on April 3, 2026, to observe local law enforcement operations firsthand. During the visit, Turnbull met with various units and joined officers on a ride-along to gain a deeper understanding of the daily responsibilities and challenges facing the force.
Turnbull, who has served as the Member of Parliament for Whitby since 2019, noted that the visit provides him with necessary perspective to advocate for police support through federal government programs. As the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance and National Revenue, Turnbull is positioned to influence federal funding discussions as local agencies navigate current operational pressures.
The Durham Regional Police Service currently manages a staff of more than 900 sworn officers and 300 unsworn members, providing service to over 706,000 residents across seven municipalities. The force is actively looking to recruit 100 new officers to address ongoing staffing needs, reflecting broader recruitment challenges within the policing sector.
These operational updates occur as the service continues to address internal concerns. In January 2026, Ontario’s Inspector General met with leadership at the police service regarding how the organization managed claims related to post-traumatic stress disorder. This meeting followed a six-year investigation by the Ontario Civilian Police Commission into the workplace culture within the force.
Nationally, the federal government has also prioritized personnel growth. The 2025 federal budget included a commitment of $1.8 billion over four years intended to strengthen the Royal Canadian Mounted Police by adding 1,000 personnel to federal policing roles.
