Whitby, Ontario residents can have their say on a major road project that aims to ease traffic and make a busy railway crossing safer. The Region of Durham is hosting a Public Information Centre on June 10, 2026, where the preferred design for widening Hopkins Street and building a rail bridge will be unveiled.
The drop-in session runs from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Anderson CVI School, located at 400 Anderson Street. The plan covers a stretch of Hopkins Street from Consumers Drive to Dundas Street, adding a two-way centre turning lane to help traffic flow better. The most significant change is a grade separation – essentially a bridge – that will carry the road over or under the Canadian Pacific Kansas City railway tracks, eliminating the at-grade crossing.
The project was first identified in the 2017 Durham Transportation Master Plan as a way to address road safety concerns, operational deficiencies, active transportation needs, and growing traffic volumes fueled by industrial growth in south Whitby. The area has seen developments like a 340,000-square-foot industrial facility on Hopkins Street, adding to the corridor’s demands.
Residents who cannot attend the in-person event can review materials online starting June 11 at durham.ca/HopkinsStreetEA. Comments will be accepted through an online form until July 9, 2026.
This study is following the Schedule B Municipal Class Environmental Assessment process, which requires public input. After this phase, a final report will be available for a 30-day public review, with a notice issued when it’s ready. The Region of Durham project page has additional details, and Senior Project Manager Bino Varghese can be reached at 905-668-4113 extension 3259 or [email protected] with questions.
