Whitchurch-Stouffville residents gathered on March 28, 2026, to witness the raising of the Lion and Sun flag of Iran at a ceremony held to show solidarity with the local Persian community. The event, hosted by Mayor Iain Lovatt, brought together community members and provincial leaders to recognize the Persian community’s presence and contributions to the area.
The flag-raising was attended by Ontario Minister of Education Paul Calandra and Minister of Children, Community and Social Services Michael Parsa. Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas was also present to support the initiative, which reflects a broader pattern of solidarity events throughout York Region. Minister Parsa previously introduced Bill 271, which established March as Persian Heritage Month in Ontario to celebrate the more than 200,000 residents of Persian descent living in the province.
The Lion and Sun flag served as the official national flag of Iran from 1907 until the 1979 Islamic Revolution, after which it was banned by the new government. In recent years, it has been adopted as a prominent symbol of opposition and resistance against the current Iranian government. The ceremony in Whitchurch-Stouffville follows a period of heightened activism, including a major solidarity rally in North York on February 14, 2026, which Toronto police estimated was attended by 350,000 people.
