Homeowners in Whitchurch-Stouffville looking to add greenery to their yards this spring can now apply for a subsidized tree-planting program offered by the Regional Municipality of York in partnership with the Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests (LEAF).
The program, which is currently accepting applications, allows residents to purchase native trees at approximately half of their regular cost. The spring planting season is active now and continues through June 30, 2026.
Participants can choose between two main options. A full-service program, ranging from $160 to $230 per tree, includes an in-person consultation with a certified arborist who helps select the best native species for a property based on light, soil, and space. A do-it-yourself option, which costs between $110 and $180 per tree, includes a virtual consultation and a planting guide.
The trees provided through these programs are native to the area. Deciduous trees typically stand five to eight feet tall, while evergreen varieties are provided at two to four feet tall.
This initiative is part of the region’s broader Greening Strategy, which aims to increase the local tree canopy cover to 40 per cent by 2051. As of 2021, the canopy cover in the region was measured at 33.4 per cent.
Because spring consultations are filling up quickly, residents are encouraged to apply soon to secure their spot. Applications can be submitted through the region’s website at york.ca/TreePlanting.
