A road crew worker is in serious condition after being hit by a vehicle while working overnight on Stouffville Road in Whitchurch-Stouffville, Ontario, early on June 30, 2026. York Regional Police say it happened shortly after 3 a.m. between Warden Avenue and Kennedy Road.
York Region Paramedic Services assessed two people at the scene and took one worker to a trauma centre with serious injuries. The driver remained on site.
The stretch of Stouffville Road between Warden and Kennedy was closed while police investigated. Officers from 5 District are asking anyone with information to call 905-830-0303, extension 7500.
The crash happened during a major overnight construction project. York Region is repaving Stouffville Road between Highway 404 and Highway 48, with work running from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weekdays through early August 2026. The project includes intersection upgrades at Woodbine Avenue, Warden Avenue, Kennedy Road, and McCowan Road, as well as culvert repairs and guiderail replacement.
Roadside safety has been a growing concern in Ontario. Over the past five fiscal years, the province recorded six deaths and 126 critical injuries in road construction, according to Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development data. The numbers have been trending upward, from 22 critical injuries in 2020-21 to 31 in 2023-24. A recent enforcement campaign focused on struck-by hazards led to 12,985 orders and more than 1,000 stop-work orders across the province.
