Environment Canada is warning boaters and residents in Whitby, Ontario, to prepare for deteriorating weather and rising waves on Lake Ontario starting Wednesday, March 4, 2026. The alert comes as marine conditions are expected to worsen through the middle of the week.
According to the latest marine forecast from Environment Canada, light winds will shift to the northeast and increase to 20 knots Thursday morning, reaching 25 knots by the evening of Thursday, March 5, 2026. Periods of rain are also expected to begin late Thursday, which may further impact visibility and safety along the shoreline.
Wave heights on the lake are forecast to reach 1.5 metres as the winds intensify. These conditions create a safety risk for small craft and can cause heavy spray that makes docks and walkways very slippery.
Waterfront users at Port Whitby Marina and the surrounding shoreline are encouraged to secure any loose gear and ensure boats are properly moored. Residents should exercise caution and avoid the edge of the lake during the wind build-up to stay safe from high waves and wet surfaces.
