This effort follows an approval from Elections Alberta for a citizen-led initiative. To be successful, the Stay Free Alberta campaign needs to collect 177,732 signatures from across the province by May 2, 2026.
That number represents 10 per cent of the total voters from the 2023 provincial election. If enough people sign the document, it would trigger a referendum, which is a process where the government asks all citizens to vote on a specific proposal.
The petition asks residents if they agree that Alberta should stop being a part of Canada. Proponents like Mitch Sylvestre from the Alberta Prosperity Project have been traveling to various communities to meet the 120-day signature collection window required by provincial rules.
