The Tłı̨chǫ Government began offering free tax filing assistance to residents in Behchokǫ̀, Northwest Territories, on March 4, 2026. This initiative helps community members complete their annual paperwork locally to ensure they receive their government benefits on time.
To use the service, residents must have a modest income and a simple tax situation. The program is not available for people who have income from being self-employed.
Trained volunteers at the Community Presence Office are providing the help on a first-come, first-served basis. These volunteers are able to download missing information, such as T4 slips, even if a resident is unable to log into their own federal tax account.
In addition to current taxes, the volunteers can help residents file their returns from 2023 and 2024 if they missed those years. Providing this help in the community saves residents the cost of hiring a private company or traveling to Yellowknife for professional assistance.
