On March 4, 2026, the provincial government announced a $3.7 million investment to establish a new automotive and smart mobility technology hub for Simcoe County, Barrie, and Orillia. The County of Simcoe is leading the project, known as a Regional Technology Development Site, which aims to help manufacturers across the region, including those in Collingwood, adapt to the changing industry.
The project is funded by $1 million from the Ontario Vehicle Innovation Network (OVIN) and $1 million from the County of Simcoe and its local government partners in Barrie and Orillia. The remaining $1.7 million comes from private industry, colleges, and universities to provide small- and medium-sized businesses with access to specialized testing equipment and research experts.
Local suppliers and manufacturers can use these resources to design and build parts for electric and self-driving vehicles. This initiative aims to support the roughly 9,000 people who already work in the motor vehicle and parts manufacturing sector across Simcoe County.
Businesses will also receive mentorship from companies like Honda of Canada Mfg. and gain access to testing facilities at Oro Station Innovation Park. This collaboration with institutions like Georgian College and Lakehead University is designed to help local companies find new customers and create more jobs in the growing technology sector.
