On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, Environment Canada lifted the official cold warning for the Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, region. Although the formal alert is over, the community continues to face dangerous temperatures that can cause frostbite in minutes.
Early this morning at 4:00 AM, sensors at the Rankin Inlet Airport recorded an air temperature of -36.9°C. When factoring in the wind, the wind chill reached -51, which remains significantly below freezing.
While the weather no longer meets the specific technical requirements for an active public alert, official forecasts show the risk to residents remains high. Under these current conditions, exposed skin can freeze in just a few minutes.
Local residents are encouraged to continue using standard cold-weather safety practices, particularly for anyone working or travelling outdoors. The end of the warning does not mean a return to mild weather for the community on the coast of Hudson Bay.
