The Sarnia Police Service will continue as the city’s main police force after a proposal to look at other options was dropped on March 9, 2026. This decision in Sarnia, Ontario, follows a period of debate among city leaders about the costs of local policing and building a new station.
City Councillor Bill Dennis took back his motion to study a switch to the provincial police force during a recent council meeting. Dennis explained that the idea was intended to send a message to the police board about the high costs of a proposed $91.1-million police station and ongoing budget disagreements.
Before it was withdrawn, the plan to look for other police options had created worry among staff at the city police force and local residents. Mayor Mike Bradley and Councillor Dennis had also been involved in public arguments regarding the mayor’s attempt to cut millions of dollars from the police project budget.
Chief Derek Davis shared his thanks for the support from the community, the police association, and government leaders following the meeting. He stated that the local force is now moving forward to focus on safety issues in the community.
