The Pacific Northwest Division of Family Practice is searching for temporary maternity doctors to keep services running at the hospital in Prince Rupert, British Columbia. This urgent search comes as the community faces a critical shortage of specialists who are trained to perform C-sections and provide surgical care for expectant mothers.
According to Northern Health, there is an immediate need for doctors to cover specific shifts throughout the spring of 2026. These dates include the current week of March 9 to March 16, as well as several weeks in April and May.
Staffing shortages have already caused the maternity ward at the Prince Rupert Regional Hospital to close at various times. These interruptions mean that some local families may have to travel elsewhere to receive medical care during childbirth.
To help improve the situation, the Prince Rupert Port Authority recently donated $125,000 to support local maternity services on March 13, 2026. However, the hospital still needs to find more doctors to ensure the ward can stay open and provide consistent care for the community.
