Residents in Cochrane, Ontario, have until March 31, 2026, to challenge a local decision that allows a large backyard home to be built at 141 Lake Louise Road. The Town of Cochrane Committee of Adjustment recently approved a request from property owners L. Kennedy and S. Redman to build a unit that is much larger than typically allowed by local rules.
The approved plan allows for a 1,400-square-foot secondary home in a separate building on the property. Under standard town rules, these types of homes are usually required to be located inside the main house and are limited to about 600 square feet. This specific approval allows for a detached building that is more than double the normal size limit.
The project is subject to two conditions, including a requirement to get approval from Northeastern Public Health regarding water and sewage services. The committee also ruled that the owners are not allowed to split the property into two separate lots at a later date.
Anyone who disagrees with the decision must file an appeal with the Ontario Land Tribunal by the March 31 deadline. Appeals require a specific fee and a written explanation of the objections. According to committee Secretary-Treasurer Elisabeth Vachon, the decision will become final and binding if no challenges are submitted by the end of the month.
