The City of Spruce Grove, Alberta, is looking for professional artists from across Canada to submit designs for a large-scale art piece to celebrate the 40th anniversary of its incorporation as a city. This project is meant to reflect the history and identity of the city, which officially reached its city status milestone on March 1, 1986.
The artwork will be placed inside the atrium at Heavy Metal Place on the wall above the entrance to the Cst. Brett Ryan Arena. This site for the art measures approximately 62 feet long by 14.75 feet high and will hold a permanent display that reflects the area’s growth.
The city has a total budget of $25,000 for the project to cover everything from the artist’s fees to the final installation. This new piece will be a major addition to the community building, which opened on May 10, 2025, as the largest construction project in the city’s history.
Artists must submit their interest by 5:00 p.m. on April 20, 2026. A committee will then choose up to three finalists to develop more detailed plans for the final selection.
The city is located on Treaty 6 territory and the Métis Nation of Alberta Region 4. This new work will eventually join the more than 250 other pieces in the city’s public art collection.
