The Ontario government is providing nearly $1 million to build a new roof over the Central Park Outdoor Rink in Collingwood, Ontario. This project will allow the facility at 200 Hume Street to stay open all year for activities like hockey and pickleball.
According to MPP Brian Saunderson, the province is contributing $980,600 through a provincial sport and recreation fund. The total cost of the project is $1.936 million, with the Town of Collingwood covering the remaining balance from its budget and reserves.
Construction is set to begin in 2026, following the rink’s recent seasonal closure on March 5, 2026. The facility currently serves about 50,000 visitors every year for public skating, hockey, and summer camps.
Adding a roof will help the rink operate regardless of the weather and extend the winter skating season. It is also expected to lower electricity use and provide a space for possible solar panels in the future.
Mayor Yvonne Hamlin said the investment will help many different groups, including people who play basketball, roller skate, or use the space for figure skating. The project has been a goal for the community since 2021.
