Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Carberry within the Municipality of North Cypress-Langford, warning residents of a late-season snowfall expected to continue through Tuesday morning, March 31, 2026.
The weather agency reports that southwestern Manitoba is in the path of a storm system that could bring 10 to 15 centimetres of snow to the region. As of 3:00 a.m. on Monday, March 30, temperatures in Carberry were recorded at -4 C with a wind chill of -10 C. The forecast for the remainder of the day calls for additional accumulation of 5 to 10 centimetres, accompanied by northeast winds gusting up to 50 kilometres per hour and a wind chill near -15 C.
While major traffic disruptions are primarily expected in Saskatchewan, local motorists in the Westman region are encouraged to use caution on highways, including Highway No. 1 near Carberry and Highway No. 16 near Neepawa. Manitoba Transportation and Infrastructure maintains real-time updates on travel conditions, and provincial snowplow crews are prepared to clear roads throughout the event.
Although late-March snowstorms are not uncommon for the prairies, this event serves as a reminder of the region’s history with significant weather. Meteorologists often compare such systems to historical events like the blizzard of March 1966, which buried southern Manitoba under 35.6 centimetres of snow with winds of 113 kilometres per hour.
Residents are advised to monitor the latest updates from Environment Canada as the system moves through the area. For local concerns, the Municipality of North Cypress-Langford municipal office in Carberry remains the primary contact for community-specific information.
