Leduc County has been awarded $7,012 in provincial funding to support local firefighter training programs for 2026. This grant is provided through the Fire Services Training Program, which is administered by Alberta Municipal Affairs to help departments across the province maintain the skills needed to respond to emergency situations.
The local fire service, which operates out of five stations in Calmar, New Sarepta, Nisku, Thorsby, and Warburg, provides essential protection to residents and holds mutual aid agreements with the City of Leduc and the Town of Millet. The Nisku District Fire Station also hosts a regional training facility where responders can practice under live-fire conditions, ensuring they are prepared for high-risk scenarios.
While the county received $22,800 through the same provincial program in 2025, the annual award amounts vary based on the number of applications and how they score during the review process. This year’s funding is part of a total $500,000 provincial pool available to fire departments across Alberta. The current grant must be used to complete training activities by May 31, 2027.
The provincial government reinstated this $500,000 annual funding in 2024 following advocacy from the Alberta Fire Chiefs Association and various municipalities. The program was originally cut in 2020, but officials have since prioritized the grant to assist communities in managing local risks and improving safety outcomes for residents.
