Recent government announcements driving these protests include fundamental changes to the Ontario Student Assistance Program. Starting in the fall of 2026, the funding structure will shift, reducing the maximum portion of grants from 85 per cent to 25 per cent while increasing the minimum portion of repayable loans from 15 per cent to 75 per cent. Additionally, demonstrators are highlighting proposed changes to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, which would exempt the premier, cabinet ministers, and their political staff from public information requests.
