The Beyond Food Community Hub in Blackfalds is issuing an urgent call for donations this April to help local families who are struggling with food insecurity. As demand for food assistance continues to rise across Alberta, the local food bank is looking for non-perishable food items and cash contributions to keep its shelves stocked.
Karie Ackermann, the executive director of the organization, says the food bank has seen a steady increase in the need for services since the start of the pandemic. Demand is particularly driven by the Lunch Box Program and the Food Hamper Program, which assist community members in accessing essential nutrition.
The appeal comes during a typically difficult time of year for charitable organizations. According to Ackermann, the period from mid-January to early June is often the slowest for donations, as interest in community giving drops off after the holiday season. This local trend matches a broader provincial struggle, where food banks are seeing demand grow by 20 to 60 per cent year over year due to the rising costs of living.
Residents who wish to help can drop off non-perishable food items at the facility located at 5014 Waghorn Street in Blackfalds. The site features drop-off bins that are accessible 24 hours a day. In addition to food, the community hub offers support through various initiatives, including a baby bank, a pet food bank, a seniors food box, and an affordable market.
Community members can also support the food bank through the annual Stuff a Bus food drive. Organized by the Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools Transportation Department, the event encourages residents to donate at local grocery stores in Blackfalds.
