Two doctors practising at Ajax Pickering Hospital have been named to the 2026 list of top doctors by a Toronto-based publication. The recognition for Dr. Howard Berger and Dr. Alexander Golger was announced on April 2, 2026, by Lakeridge Health, highlighting the clinical expertise available to patients in the Durham Region.
The annual list, now in its fifth year, identifies leading physicians across 56 medical specialties. According to the health network, this honour is particularly significant because it is determined through peer nominations, meaning the selected doctors were recognized for their professional excellence by fellow physicians.
Dr. Howard Berger serves as the Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Co-Medical Director of the Women’s and Children’s Program at Lakeridge Health. Beyond his local leadership, Dr. Berger is a Professor in the University of Toronto Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and leads the divisions of Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Obstetric Ultrasound at St. Michael’s Hospital. Dr. Alexander Golger, who performs surgeries at the local hospital, is a plastic surgeon who also maintains a private practice.
For the local community, the presence of recognized medical specialists at the hospital is a key indicator of the quality of care provided close to home. Ajax Pickering Hospital, which serves over 75,000 emergency department visits annually, remains a vital part of the five-hospital network that supports residents across the region. The hospital first opened in 1954 and underwent an $80 million redevelopment that was completed in 2010.
