Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Stratford, Mitchell, and Southern Perth County as brief bursts of intense snow move through the area this morning, April 7, 2026.
The weather alert, which went into effect at 5:15 a.m., warns that lake-effect snow off Lake Huron is creating localized bands of heavy precipitation. Residents can expect total snowfall accumulations of 4 to 8 cm before the conditions begin to taper off later this morning.
Drivers should prepare for quickly changing and potentially difficult travel conditions. The snowfall is expected to reduce visibility on local roads due to the heavy snow and blowing snow.
This weather pattern occurs when cold Arctic air passes over the relatively warmer waters of Lake Huron, causing the temperature contrast to generate intense, localized bands of snow. Because of its location in Perth County—downwind of Lake Huron—the area remains susceptible to these quick-hitting winter events even as the spring season continues.
