Residents in Ajax can pick up free compost for their gardens on April 25, 2026, during the town’s annual giveaway event. The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Ajax Operations Centre, located at 800 Salem Road North.
Those planning to attend are limited to filling up to four blue boxes or other reusable containers with compost per vehicle, while supplies last. The town asks that participants bring their own shovels to help with the collection process.
During the event, staff will also be collecting non-perishable food donations to support Feed The Need in Durham. This organization serves as the central hub for emergency food providers across the region, distributing approximately 2 million pounds of food annually to 65 different food banks and emergency support programs.
The compost provided at the event is created through Durham Region‘s green bin program. Organic waste collected from households is processed using anaerobic digestion, a method that turns food scraps and yard waste into nutrient-rich natural fertilizer.
This initiative is part of the Town of Ajax Green Living Days programming. The Ajax Operations Centre, which serves as the host site, is a facility designed with an environmental focus that includes features such as a green roof, geothermal heating, and solar panels.
