Residents in Markham should prepare for upcoming road work as York Region begins a major watermain replacement project this spring. The initiative aims to rehabilitate 2.8 kilometres of water infrastructure between Hawkridge Avenue, east along Highway 7 to Ninth Line, and Ninth Line between Church Street and Rose Way, and between Highway 7 and Berczy Gate. The upgrades are to ensure reliable service as the community continues to grow.
The construction is expected to run through 2028. Because the existing route along Church Street is unable to support the new, upgraded pipes, crews will install the new system along a different path. The updated alignment will run south on Hawkridge Avenue, east along Highway 7 to Ninth Line, with additional work on Ninth Line near Church Street and Berczy Gate. Once the new pipes are fully operational, the old watermain will be taken out of service.
Drivers should expect temporary lane restrictions on Bullock Drive, Hawkridge Avenue, Highway 7, Church Street, and Ninth Line while this work is underway. Although there are no planned water or wastewater service interruptions for homes and businesses, the region notes that residents may notice increased noise, dust, and construction vehicles in the area throughout the project.
The project is part of a larger regional effort to upgrade infrastructure in response to rapid population growth. For any questions or concerns regarding the work, residents can contact the region at 1-877-464-9675, through the TTY line at 711, or by emailing the project team while referencing the Markham Highway 7 Watermain Rehabilitation.
