Residents in Orangeville are invited to participate in a community tree planting event on April 25, 2026, to help expand the town’s urban forest. The event takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Mill Creek Trail.
Organized by Sustainable Orangeville, a committee of Town Council, and Credit Valley Conservation, the initiative encourages community members to plant native trees and shrubs. This work supports the town’s long-term goal of increasing the local tree canopy to 40 per cent by 2040. As of 2021, the town’s canopy coverage was approximately 24 per cent.
The area near Mill Creek has been a focus for environmental restoration, including the removal of an old concrete weir that previously blocked fish from moving through the stream. Planting native trees in this location helps build on that progress by improving wildlife habitat and supporting overall ecological health.
Credit Valley Conservation is one of 36 conservation authorities in Ontario and has been working to manage and restore the Credit River watershed since 1954. Through ongoing partnerships with residents and community groups, the organization has planted more than seven million trees across the region since 1955. Those interested in joining the planting efforts on April 25 are encouraged to register through the town website.
