Property owners in Blackfalds can expect an increase in their annual tax bills this year as the town prepares to finalize its 2026 tax rates. At the upcoming meeting on April 14, 2026, town council will move forward with the 2026 Property Tax Rate Bylaw, which includes a 2.20% municipal tax increase.
For an average home in Blackfalds valued at $380,023, the municipal portion of the tax bill will rise by $62. However, when combined with a $98 increase from the provincial government for school requisitions, the total average annual increase for homeowners will be $161. Provincial school requisitions rose across Alberta this year, with residential rates in the town increasing by 14% and non-residential rates by 13%.
The municipal tax increase follows the approval of the $38,973,535 operating budget on March 10, 2026. During the budget process, council and administration worked to lower the initial tax proposal. The planned increase was brought down from an original estimate of $10.77 per month for an average home to $5.40 per month.
During those deliberations, an attempt to further offset the tax increase was unsuccessful. Councillor Ryan Brown moved to reduce the town’s Solid Waste Reserve by $233,949 to lower the tax burden, but the motion was defeated, with only Councillors Brown and Jim Sands voting in favour. The finalized budget and the upcoming tax bylaw process are managed by the Town of Blackfalds administration.
